Three Miners gearing up for all-star game

MARION (WSIL)– The Southern Illinois Miners will have three players representing Southern Illinois in this year’s All-Star game, catcher Andy Cosgrove, pitcher Chase Cunningham, and third baseman Gianfranco Wawoe, but as opposed to the standard East vs West or Rookies vs Experienced, this year’s All-Star game pits the Frontier League’s best against the best from another league.

Whether it’s your first time or you’ve been there before, it’s always a rewarding feeling to be selected as an all-star in the league.

"Really excited about it, I was working hard all offseason for this opportunity and good things have happened so far this season, and I’m really looking forward to this All-Star game," said Cunningham.

"Well I think, number one, the city is exciting, we’re going to New York, so that will be pretty cool, and it’s cool that also that we’re not only representing our team, but our league this year," said Cosgrove.

In year’s past the Frontier All-Stars have played East versus West, or Rookies vs Experienced, but this year, the Frontier League All-Stars are teaming up to face the Can-Am League All-Stars.

"My biggest thing, I love competition, I love just going out there every day, just seeing what you got against everybody else, especially the best against the best. So I want to throw my best stuff, and we’ll see what they got," said Cunningham.

"The competition is going to be a little bit harder because it’s the best of the Frontier League against the best of the Can-Am league, so it’s going to be the best of the best against each other," said Wawoe.

And when the two leagues square off, there’s a little more on the line than just putting on a good show.

"It almost means a little more because we’re kind of putting it on the line, you know, what this league is compared to another. Just because we beat them or they beat us, doesn’t mean that league’s better, but it still kind of gives a little bit of bragging rights, and a little bit of authority," said Cosgrove.

Cosgrove, Cunningham, and Wawoe head to the Big Apple Wednesday, July 10, for the 2019 All-Star game.
