MURPHYSBORO (WSIL) - In the Class 4A playoffs, the Murphysboro Red Devils hosted the Kankakee McNamara Fighting Irish.

The Red Devils started early, scoring within the first 12 seconds of the game on a punt return. The Red Devils went for the two-point conversion, and Dezmond Clark gave them the early lead at 8-0.

The Fighting Irish fought back, but big plays from the defense kept the game close. Red Devil's Lataveon Caves had a huge interception to keep Murphysboro ahead.

Fighting Irish's quarterback Tyler Hills connected with Owen Jackson for a 42 yard touchdown. Kankakee would come back after being down by two touchdowns early in the game.

With just under a minute to go in the 4th quarter, the score was tied at 27. The Red Devils get the touchdown and the 2 point conversion to seal the deal and send Murphysboro to the semi finals. The final score in Murphysboro was 35-27.

Star senior running back Dezmond Clark said it was a dream come true.

"In our school history we've never been to the semi finals," said Clark. " And now were going into the final four and that's one win away from state. This is just like dreams are actually coming true. As a child I always thought about making this type of situation happen for my town, and I know we haven't had it in such a long time I just want to make everyone proud."

The Red Devils will travel to Effingham to take on the Flaming Hearts. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
