Miners score late, edge first place Freedom

Posted: Updated:

MARION -- The Southern Illinois Miners closed within a game of first place with a second straight win over Florence, beating the Freedom 2-1.

The Miners broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth, with some help from the Freedom.  With runners on the corners and one out, Gianfranco Wawoe hit a high chopper that Florence third baseman Trevor Craport had to back up to field.  Kirvin Moesquit did not break for home immediately and was stuck in no man's land.  Craport's throw was wide of first, allowing Moesquit to score what turned out to be the winning run.

Miners' starter Chase Cunningham was outstanding.  He struck out seven and allowed just one run in eight innings.  He improves to 9-4 on the season.

Southern Illinois is now 46-34 on the season tied with Evansville, a half game back of River City and one game back of the division leading Freedom.

The Miners and Freedom will wrap up their series Thursday night somewhere around 6:35
