Miners stay hot, close in on first place

Posted: Updated:

MARION -- After seeing their ten-game winning streak snapped Sunday, the Southern Illinois Miners got right back on the winning track with a 6-3 win over West Division leading Florence.

Miners' starter Ryan McAuliffe was sensational, allowing only two hits over seven shutout innings.  He struck out five and walked one.

Southern Illinois scored four in the third and two more in the fourth to build a 6-0 lead.  The Freedom tallied three in the eighth but could get no more.

The Miners have won 11 of 12 and 15 of 18 to close within two games of the Freedom.  Southern Illinois still sits in fourth place in the division though, behind River City and Evansville.  The Rascals and Otters were rained out in Evansville Tuesday.

Those teams will play a doubleheader Wednesday.  The Miners and Freedom will go at it again at 6;35.
