Miners' win streak reaches 9

Posted: Updated:

MARION -- Neither a rain delay nor the Schaumburg Boomers could derail the Southern Illinois Miners express.

The Miners opened a critical six-game homestand with a 6-3 win over the Boomers.  The start of the game was delayed by rain for nearly an hour.

Once play began, Joe Duncan drove in three runs.  Arturo Nieto and Taylor Sparks each had two hits and scored two runs to lead the offensive attack.

On the mound, Chase Cunningham allowed two runs on five hits in six and two-thirds innings of work to improve to 8-4 on the season.

The Miners win coupled with Evansville's loss moves Southern Illinois into the top wildcard spot, a half game up on the Otters and River City Rascals.

Division leading Florence also lost, which means the Miners are back within four games of the Freedom, three on the loss side.  Florence will visit Rent One for three games next week.
