Blazing a trail

CARBONDALE -- There will be plenty of firsts this season for the SIU women's soccer team.

Of course that happens when its your inaugural season.

The Salukis hit the practice field for the first time Wednesday morning.  Some players were here this summer and were involved in the strength and conditioning program, but this was the first time head coach Grant Williams was able to work out his team.

Williams has 26 players on the first Saluki roster, including 19 freshmen.

The idea of the first practice on the very first women's soccer team in school history was not lost on the players.

"It meant so much," said freshman forward Blake Clark who is from Marion.  "This is something I've dreamed about since I was a little girl.  Ever since I decided I was going to play college soccer, and that was what I was one of the things I was going to strive for, I've prayed that SIU would get women's soccer. And it just happened at the exact right time.  As soon as we heard of the team, me and Marissa (Basi) were already talking about it and contacted Grant, and got on it as soon as we heard the news.  It's really exciting. "

The Salukis waste no time getting into game action, as they will play their exhibition opener Sunday at Tennessee Tech.
