Superman Classic kicks off big week of archery in southern Illinois

MASSAC COUNTY (WSIL) -- Hundreds of archers take aim at the Mermet Lake State Conservation this week.

"Today is the first day of the Superman Classic archery tournament, which is the locally sponsored prior to the ASA Classic. Starting on Thursday is the ASA Classic. This is the world championships for the ASA association," said executive director of Greater Metropolis CVB Trish Steckenrider.

The Superman Classic is open to the public at any level of experience, but a bit stiffer competition is expected later in the week.

"This is a little different this year, because we host the Worlds, and not a qualifier for the Worlds, so we're seeing a little bit of a different demographic coming in, because these are the people that have already made it to the finals," said Steckenrider.

Not only the best of the best across the country will make their way to southern Illinois this week, but an international draw as well.

"We usually see anywhere from thirty-five to forty states come in for this, and then Canada and even some from Europe. It usually starts a little slower today. So today we expect a little over two hundred archers coming out, but by the end of the week when ASA arrives, there will be over two thousand," said Steckenrider.

Steckenrider adds this comes as a growing trend as the rise of popularity in the sport continues in the region.

"More and more each year are coming in. We also prior to this event, about two weeks ago, we hosted the S3DA, which is the Youth World Championships as well, and that event since it's come to Metropolis has doubled in it's attendance every year for the last three years, and that's kind of what we're seeing here," said Steckenrider.

The Superman Classic runs through Wednesday and is open to the public each day, with the ASA Classic starting on Thursday.
