Gordon feeling right at home

WEST FRANKFORT -- Pete Gordon is still smiling from ear to ear.

Tuesday, West Frankfort hired Gordon to be its new head boys basketball coach.  Gordon replaces Evan Wyllie, who resigned to take a grad assistant position at the University of Western Florida

Gordon admitted it was tough to leave Thompsonville after five plus years, but the chance to come back to coach his alma mater was too much for the former Redbird to pass up.

"It was really surreal having graduated from here in '91," said Gordon.  "You have all these memories of this gym, Max Morris, as a player, and then when you walk in, many years later, as the new head coach--it just seems unreal, but at the same time, very exciting. "

Gordon said walking around the gym and locker rooms brings back plenty of memories of his days playing for coach David Lee.  In fact, he says it was quite strange moving his stuff into the coach's office that Lee held for so many years and that Gordon had been in as a player many times before.

"My buddy called to congratulate me, and he was like I can tell in your voice this is just the honeymoon stage of the whole process," Gordon said.  "I agreed.  It's dominated my thoughts, and it's exciting."

Gordon says he is still working on putting his staff together as well as meeting his new players.
