Flooding causes shut down of Cave-In-Rock ferry

Posted: Updated:

WSIL-- The Cave-in-Rock ferry has temporarily shut down services due to a mechanical issue.

Services were halted Saturday at 6:00 a.m. to allow a couple of days to repair the rudder.

Ferry operator Lonnie Lewis says due to the extended period of flooding, the ferry has encountered floating debris while operating.  Lewis believes something may have damaged the rudder forcing the ferryboat to be taken out of service for repairs.

The ferry normally operates from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. 7 days a week and carries about 500 vehicles across the Ohio river daily.

The ferry is shut down until further noticed, and drivers will need to seek a alternative route.
