Illinois gas tax increase goes into effect Monday

Posted: Updated:

WSIL—Drivers can expect to pay more at the pump ahead of the July 4 holiday weekend as Illinois prepares for a gas tax increase.

Starting Monday, July 1, the gas tax will double to 38 cents while the tax on diesel will rise to 45.5 cents a gallon.

Gov. JB Pritzker's staff said the increase is expected to cost the average driver $100 dollars a year.

The tax increase comes after Illinois lawmakers voted to pass a $45 billion capital infrastructure plan.

Along with gasoline, the bill also will tax things like cigarettes and vehicle registration.

According to GasBuddy, Illinois has an average price of $2.90 per gallon, while Missouri has an average of $2.52 and Kentucky with $2.60.

This increase makes Illinois the second highest state in the nation for gas tax behind New York and California.
