Top 5 Essentials to Bring with You Camping This Summer

Originally posted on

40 million Americans go camping every year. Most of these trips take place during the summer.

While summer camping is a beloved pastime for some, for others… It may prove to be an uncomfortable experience.

Inclement weather, bugs, difficulty preparing food and more can all wreak havoc on a well-intentioned outing.

To ensure that you get the most of your next expedition, below, we’ve outlined a few things that you should bring with you camping.

1. Shelter

Sleeping under the stars sounds nice when camping. The truth is though, between bad weather and wildlife, that rosy picture you have in your head isn’t likely to match up with reality.

To stay on the side of caution, bring some shelter with you when you go on your next camping trip.

Shelter could be a tent, RV or even the inside of your car.

2. Bedding

Nothing ruins a camping trip quite like sleeping poorly and having a sore back. To cut back on the possibility of both of those things, bringing bedding with you is a must.

For us, bedding includes blankets, pillows and an air mattress or a quality sleep mat.

If you’re planning on sleeping in a tent or in your car, make sure that your bedding fits into whatever space you’re planning on staying in before hitting the road.

3. Bug Spray

Bugs ruin camping trips. Remember that bit of insight and you’ll be well ahead of the camping curve.

To keep bugs at bay, bug spray is something that you must bring with you camping.

Horse fly spray, mosquito spray, bug repelling candles – bring it all.

Believe us when we say that you can’t be overly cautious in this regard.

4. First Aid Supplies

Camping is special because you get to step away from your planned community and into rugged, unplanned nature. While exhilarating, hanging out somewhere that hasn’t been modified by humanity presents dangers.

Snake bites, falls and other wilderness-induced illnesses can all rear their heads while you’re camping. A first aid kit that’s prepared to deal with those possibilities could literally save your life.

5. Cooking Supplies

You have a couple of options when it comes to eating while camping…

On the one hand, you could eat a bunch of dehydrated foods that come in bags, cans, etc. On the other hand, you could cook something delicious.

We prefer the latter.

To cook while camping, you’ll need firewood or a portable propane tank. You’ll also need things like pans, tongs and other cooking essentials.

Always stay aware of your surroundings while cooking to ensure that you do not spark a forest fire.
