Beanes leaving SIU - WSIL-TV 3 Southern Illinois

Beanes leaving SIU

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- You may need name tags when it comes to recognizing the Basketball Salukis.

Former Carbondale standout Darius Beane announced on social media Thursday that he has asked for his release and will transfer.

Beane played in all 32 games as a freshman, averaging three points and three rebounds in 15.5 minutes a game off the bench.  He scored a career high 16 points at the Arena in a comeback win against Northern Iowa.

Beane's father, Anthony Beane Senior, was an assistant coach under Barry Hinson, but was not retained when Bryan Mullins took over as the new head coach.  His brother, Anthony Beane Junior, is SIU's third all-time leading scorer.

Darius' cousin, Jimmy Beane, also announced on social media he will be moving on.

Beane did not qualify academically for a scholarship out of high school last year.  Instead of going the juco route, he paid his own way at SIU this school year with hopes of earning scholarship next year.

Due to graduation and transfers, there are only four players left that were on the SIU roster when the season ended two months ago:  Aaron Cook, Eric McGill, Brendan Gooch, and Sekou Dembele, who redshirted his freshman year.

The Salukis have added two new players in the past two days, signing Eastern Illinois transfer Ben Harvey and Wisconsin's prep Mr. Basketball from this past season, Marcus Domask.

Harvey and Domask are the fourth and fifth signees for Mullins since he took over in late March, joining Phoenix high school guard Trent Brown, Northwestern grad transfer Barret Benson, and juco transfer Harwin Francois.  Evanston high school guard Lance Jones and Bloomington high school forward Chris Payton signed in November and remain committed to coming to Carbondale.

Here's how the roster looks at this point, with two scholarships remaining:

Barret Benson, 6-10 C
Aaron Cook, 6-2 G
Eric McGill, 6-2 G

Brendan Gooch, 6-5 F

Harwin Francois, 6-5 G
Ben Harvey, 6-5 G (will redshirt)

Trent Brown, 6-1 G
Sekou Dembele, 6-7 F  (redshirt)
Marcus Domask, 6-6 F
Lance Jones, 6-2 G
Chris Payton, 6-7 F
