The internet sometimes makes fun of vegans, as does the media. But they’re truly heroes among us, at least when it comes to saving the earth (let alone the animals!) If each American went vegan for just one day a year, we could reduce our greenhouse emissions by millions of tons.

And yes, being vegan is hard. But so is being on a diet, or being gluten-free, or keeping kosher. You have to think ahead, plan, and choose to go out of your way every day.

Being a vegan is a lot of things, but it’s not impossible. Nor will it deprive you of protein and make all food boring. Want to know more about what being a vegan is really like?

Myth #1: Finding Vegan Food is Impossible and Expensive

When you go out to eat, it’s harder to order than it is for someone who’s vegetarian or a true omnivore. But it’s not impossible! You just have to get creative. It may mean being picky about substitutions or ordering things from the side menu a la carte as your meal.

As for being expensive, true earth-based vegan food is some of the cheapest there is. Rice? Beans? Together they’re the perfect vegan meal and they’re some of the cheapest things at the store.

It’s only when you start getting into packaged foods that being vegan gets expensive. Sure, buy yourself a few blocks of tofu, but otherwise, stay in the produce/dry goods aisle.

Myth #2: They Don’t Get Enough Calcium

When you stop eating dairy, people start asking you about your calcium levels. But did you know that milk and milk products have a terrible absorption rate? You’re not digesting much of that calcium anyways.

You’ll process way more calcium from foods like leafy greens and nuts. Since they’re from the earth, it’s more available for absorption in your body.

Myth #3: It’s All About the Animals

For some vegans, this is true. For others, animals are only part of it. Being a vegan for just one meal – one meal (!) saves 3000 gallons of water, 16 pounds of grain, along with animals lives.

That means you can truly reduce your carbon footprint without turning off a single light (though you should do that too).

Regular food uses up so many resources to make, Aitken * Aitken * Cohn could probably sue them for damages to the earth.

How to Go Vegan

If you want to go vegan, whether it’s for the earth or Beyonce tickets, great! Start by just going vegan one day a week, or maybe on the weekends. As you get used to it, you can work your way up to full-time veganism.

And just a reminder, you don’t have to be vegan 100% of the time. There is just as much respect in being “mostly vegan”. The animals and the earth are still getting the bulk of the benefits.
