WEST FRANKFORT (WSIL) -- The Old King Festival is back, but it's one day shorter than in previous years.
This year's celebration of the coal mining industry kicks off Thursday (May 9) with the midway opening at 5 p.m. Things wrap up Saturday.
The festival used to be a four-day event that overlapped Mother's Day, but Old King Coal Festival President Steve Sawalich says the committee felt the fest would benefit more if it was shortened by a day. He says attendance was usually lower on the holiday and this move allowed the committee to focus more on the busier days.
