3 Ways to Save: Advice for graduates

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- High school and college students around the country will soon be graduating. Before deciding "what's next", we offer some advice on saving money after receiving a diploma.

Weigh the costs and benefits of attending college or graduate school. College is not the answer for everyone. Before a student and his or her family takes out loans and spends a lot of money, figure out what your students wants to do. If they're not ready for college, consider a trade school or military service. As for college students, make sure grad school is cost effective and beneficial to your long term goals. Not every field requires or compensates for a graduate degree.

Learn to cook. Staying in to eat will save big time cash long term instead of hitting the drive thru or sit-down restaurant.

Start a 401K. It's never too early to start saving for your retirement. Experts say by starting at 22 vs. 30, you could add hundreds of thousands of dollars more to your retirement account.
