All-Star Sunday

Posted: Updated:

CARTERVILLE (WSIL) -- Two dozen of the area's top senior boys high school basketball players put on their jerseys one final time for the 32nd annual All-Star Classic, put together by Cobden head coach Wendell Wheeler and hosted by John A. Logan College.

Herrin's Sayler Shurtz and Thompsonville's Pete Gordon served as the teams' coaches.

Team Gordon built a double digit first half lead behind the hot shooting of Sesser-Valier's Tyler Winchester.  Winchester hit four of his six 3-pointers in the first  half.  He finished with 23 on the day and was named team MVP.

West Frankfort's CJ Johnson led Team Gordon with 24.  Fairfield's Brian Estes (14 points) and Thompsonville's Anthony Darge (12 points) also reached double figures.

Team Shurtz rallied to cut the lead to 56-54 by halftime and seized control early in the second half behind the hot shooting of Herrin's Hayden Holloway.  Holloway also buried six 3-pointers and finished with a team high 24 points.  Chester's Keith Kiner III tallied 23 and took home team MVP honors as Team Shurtz won 130-120.

Team Shurtz put six players in double figures as Nashville's Bryce Bultman scored 17.  Massac County's Hayden Lee added 13 while Gallatin County's Audie Goebel chipped in 11, and Fairfield's Jayzale O'Neal added ten.

NOTES:

Each year, they hand out two special awards at the All-Star Classic--the Ron Herrin Award and the Shawn Oldani Award.  Winchester won the Herrin Award, given to the player who best exemplifies the love of the game, leadership, sportsmanship, friendship, and goodwill Coach Herrin displayed.

Cobden's Zane Nance won the Oldani Award, given to the player who displays Shawn's traits of hustle, tough play, and sportsmanship.
