Missouri State mashes five homers to beat SIU

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- Joey Polak and Dakota Kotowski provided quite the one-two punch, combining to club five homers and drive in eight as Missouri State beat SIU 10-5 in the Salukis' Missouri Valley Conference opener.

Kotowski and and Polak hit back to back homers in the first, as the Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

SIU answered with three in the bottom of the first on RBI hits from Ian Walters and Alex Lyon, and a run scoring ground out from Philip Archer.

Polak put the Bears back on top in the third with a two-run homer.

The Salukis tied it in the fourth on Addison Fugitt's RBI single.  Fugitt later scored on a throwing error while stealing third to give SIU a 5-4 lead after four innings.

Missouri State tied it in the sixth, then took the lead later in the inning when Kotowski and Polak went back to back for the second time in the game.

The Bears scored the game's final six runs for the win.  They improve to 10-19, 3-1 in the MVC.  SIU falls to 15-11, 0-1 in conference play.

With rain in the forecast Sunday, the teams will wrap up their series with a doubleheader Saturday, starting at 1:00.
