3 Ways to Save: Eating healthy

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- March is National Nutrition Month and many times people think eating healthy has to be expensive. But that is not the case. Here are three ways to save on eating healthier.

1. Shop for produce when it's in season.  Generally speaking, it's cheaper. Produce that is not in season has often been transported halfway around the world to get to your store, which is not good for either the environment or your budget. Buy produce by the bag if you can. That is usually a lot cheaper than buying by the piece. If you buy more than you need, you can freeze the rest or incorporate it into next week's meal plans.

2. Skip the gas station soda fountain or the morning cup of coffee at the drive thru. More often than not you're drinking extra calories and not thinking about it because you're not actually eating. For example, a small latte has 100 calories and more than three grams of fat. Drink water instead. You should be getting eight cups a day.

3. Pack your lunch. Experts say when you pack your own lunch instead of ordering take out or going to the drive thru, you're not only going to eat better but also save money, to the tune of nearly two thousand dollars a year.
