Drake wins dogfight, sweeps Salukis

CARBONDALE -- At 6-6 through the first 12 Missouri Valley Conference games, the SIU Salukis found themselves right in the middle of the Valley scrum, with home games left against three of the teams above them in the standings.

The Drake Bulldogs came to town and showed once again the Arena is far from the feared stop it used to be, completing a regular season sweep of the Salukis with a 72-69 win.

Outside of a brief SIU flurry in the game's first two minutes, Drake controlled the action, leading by as many as 12 in the first half and then taking a 42-35 lead into the locker room at half.

The Salukis struggled to get any closer in the second half, but they never let the Bulldogs get away, either.

SIU finally got some traction in the final three minutes cutting it to 65-62 on Aaron Cook's steal and dunk with 2:28 remaining.  Drake quickly answered with a bucket and foul from DJ Wilkins, who led the Bulldogs with 20 on the night.

Trailing by four, Marcus Bartley buried a three with ten seconds left to pull Southern within 70-69.  SIU quickly fouled Wilkins, who made both free throws with :07 remaining to push the lead back to three.

The Salukis had a chance to tie in the final seconds, but could not get a shot off before the buzzer, securing the Bulldog win.

SIU falls to 7-6 at home this season.  The Salukis are 13-13 overall, 6-7 in the MVC.  Drake improved to 19-7 (8-5) under first year head coach Darian DeVries.

Up next for SIU, a trip to Indiana State Saturday.
