Salukis hang on to beat Purple Aces

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE-- The Basketball Salukis opened up a two-game home-stand with a 78-73 win over Evansville.

The Dawgs came out with a solid offensive attack, which saw all five starters score double-digits, Kavion Pippen leading the way with 18 points and 6 rebounds, and the selfless play of Aaron Cook, with 15 points and 7 assists.

After a back and forth opening half, SIU head into the locker room with a 35-30 lead, to the credit of Marcus Bartley's three in the final seconds of the half.

The Salukis led by as much as twelve in the 2nd, but the Purple Aces wouldn't go away quietly, making a late run to make it close, but the Dawgs hang on in the end to win 78-73.

"This is a team that has to get everybody going for us to be successful and for us to win.  We had that tonight with all of our guys that were in the game, and that came off the bench," said SIU junior guard Aaron Cook.

"Aaron had seven assists and one turnover tonight, and he also played his tail off on KJ Riley.  So if I have to brag on anybody, I'll have to brag on him because he was extremely unselfish, made great reads, kept the tempo defensively and offensively up.  I thought what he did tonight is what we have to have to be successful," said SIU head basketball coach Barry Hinson.

Salukis improve to 6-6 in conference play, 13-12 overall.

They return to the court Tuesday as they host Drake.
