Salukis snap skid with stirring second half surge

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- The SIU Salukis overcame a 21-point deficit to pick up a desperately needed Missouri Valley Conference win, beating Northern Iowa 70-62 Wednesday.

Having already lost four straight, the Dawgs couldn't have gotten off to a much worse start.  Northern Iowa jumped out to a 22-4 lead and led by as many as 21 in the first half before Southern came roaring back.

The Salukis scored the final five points of the first half and trailed 35-19 at the half.  SIU then came out and scored the first 15 in the second half to make it 20 straight points and all but erase UNI's enormous early lead.

Guards Aaron Cook and Darius Beane led the defensive charge for the Salukis, helping hold the Panthers without a field goal for the first 8:57 of the second half.

Cook's three-pointer tied the game at 39, and then tied at 41, Sean Lloyd untied it with another three, putting the Salukis in front to stay.

Cook led four in double figures with 17.  Lloyd and Beane added 16 each with Eric McGill adding 13.

SIU improves to 10-10 (3-4).  The Salukis will visit MVC co-leader Loyola Sunday afternoon.
