Metcalf earns win number 600 in coaching career

SESSER-- The old saying goes the longer you do something, the better you get at it, and the same could be said of Sesser-Valier/Waltonville's head girls basketball coach Rick Metcalf, earning his 600th career coaching win in a 69-27 win over Trico Monday night.

Upon earning his 600th win earlier this week, Metcalf says he realized something about himself.

"First thing that came to mind is that I'm old," said Metcalf.

Over the span of 28 years of being a head coach, the wins began to add up on Metcalf's stat-line, and the 600-Club just kind of snuck up on him.

"You know, you hit 400, and that's Hall of Fame, and I thought that was cool, and then all of a sudden you get 20 more here, 25 more there, and it just keeps going, 500? I didn't think I'd get any more than that, and then all of a sudden, I'm like, 'Wait a minute, I'm at 590…' then all of a sudden it's 600. So you really don't think about it that much, it just happens," said Metcalf.

Over the years, winning has become part of the culture wherever Metcalf goes, may it be coaching at the high school and even collegiate level. He credits his success to players buying into his system year in and year out.

"We've had one losing record, and that was back in 1985, and that was my first and last time with a losing record. So as a player or a coach, since 1975, I've been fortunate enough to be around winning programs, so definitely lucky," said Metcalf.

And with win number 600 out of the way, it's onto the next milestone, which for Metcalf, is right around the corner.

"Well hopefully win our next ball game, you know? That's pretty much how we do things around here, you just look at the next one. I've got all kinds of people calling me, congratulating me. That's cool and everything, but you're already thinking about the next game," said Metcalf.

Metcalf and the Red Devils go after win number 601 when they travel to take on the 15-1 Goreville Blackcats Wednesday night.
