Ford announces he's transferring to Illinois

CARTERVILLE, Ill. -- Well after a year in SEC country, a former area high school football standout has announced he is transferring schools to be closer to home.

Carterville's Luke Ford announced he will be transferring to Illinois following his year at Georgia. He played sparingly in nine games, catching one pass for four yards.

Ford said his family was the reason behind the move, particularly his grandparents who are dealing with health issues.

"Came back here for the bye week, and I spent my whole time here basically in the hospital with my grandpa in the ICU, and seeing him like that was just terrible. It was hard for me. And I waited until the end of the year, because I wanted to finish it out with my guys, and not be a distraction, and so I finished it out, put my transfer papers in, and basically it's just been getting home now, playing in front of family," said Ford.

Ford is applying for the hardship waiver in hopes that he can take the field right away next year with the Illini.
