SVW edges Vienna

Posted: Updated:

VIENNA -- Back in November, the Vienna Lady Eagles won at Sesser-Valier/Waltonville 48-47, snapping the Red Devils' 63-game Black Diamond Conference winning streak.  SVW tried to avenge that loss Thursday night at Vienna.

The Red Devils came out fired up and scored the game's first 11 points.  SVW led 17-9 after one.

The Lady Eagles controlled the second quarter, outscoring the Red Devils 12-5 to cut it to 22-21 at the half.

The teams were tied at 33 in the fourth until Jaice McCowen hit for five straight, and Sami McCowen added a baseline jumper to cap a 7-0 run for a 40-33 SVW lead.

Vienna once again rallied, closing to within 43-42 on Emme Treat's three-pointer with 8.4 seconds to play.  The Lady Eagles fouled Sami McCowen who made both free throws to give SVW a three-point cushion with 6.9 seconds to play.

Haleigh Keeling was able to get a good look at a potential game-tying three at the buzzer, but it would not fall as the Red Devils held on for a 45-42 win to improve to 13-2 on the season.  Vienna falls to 9-6.
