Learning while celebrating the Illinois Bicentennial

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Teachers at Lewis Elementary School say Illinois history is important for their students, and December 3 is a special day in Illinois history, as it is the state turns 200 years old.

And that's not the only bicentennial this month. First lady Mary Todd Lincoln would have turned 200 later this month. Lewis Elementary is celebrating her role in history, in conjunction with the state's 200th birthday.

The school had classrooms set up with different stations offering hands-on learning activities for the students. Stations included activities such as building Lincoln's cabin out of pretzels, learning how to square dance, and painting Illinois shaped ornaments.

Teachers hope that the hands-on learning experience can help students retain the information more effectively.
