New Call and Claims Center brings hundreds of Jobs

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Centene Corporation has leased the former K's Merchandise building in the University Mall in Carbondale. The building will be used as an insurance call and claims center. The corporation put in five million dollars to remodel the building. Carbondale's Mayor, Mike Henry believes the 80,000 square feet of space of the new center will bring hundreds of jobs to the region.

"They’ve done a five million dollars remodel using local contractors they’re going to hire somewhere around four hundred employees," said Henry.

Steven Mitchell, Carbondale’s economic director, the city has been in the making for more than a year.

"They contacted the city looking for a large amount of square footage," said Mitchell.

Carbondale Mayor Mike Henry said the center is not a typical call center, because it will not operate 24 hours a day.

"The good thing with the claims center [is it] pays better wages than the call center does that's going to be good for the folks around here that will gain a job there," said Henry.

Mitchell said this is a great time to bring more work in this growing city.

"It means a lot more opportunity for people to support their families and one thing i should mention is Centene has a great reputation for employee friendliness a really good benefit package a really good pay scale," said Mitchell.

News 3 reached out to Centene Corporation about hiring and pay, but haven't heard back. Officials said the construction of this project is set to wrap up January 1.
