Task force created to explore highway from Carbondale to Metro East

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Lawmakers pass a resolution creating a task force to study a possible highway between Carbondale and the Metro East.

The House and Senate passed the resolution by a nearly-unanimous vote. Only two lawmakers voted no, both in the House.

Politicians have been discussing the idea for years and State Sen. Paul Schimpf (R-Waterloo) is glad to see a formal study on it.

"I think that it would help not only SIU Carbondale, I think it would also help us develop the full potential of the Kaskaskia Port District," Schimpf said.

The resolution says the Southwest Illinois Connector Task Force will study the cost, feasibility and environmental impact of a four-lane highway.

It also plans to look into both public and private funding for the project.
