Keeping pets safe from winter toxins

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- This time of year, temperatures often dip below freezing, and the products that help us deal with those issues can be harmful to pets.

Many of us will be topping off the antifreeze in our cars, or spreading ice melt on our decks and sidewalks. But it's important to keep in mind, that those winter-proofing staples can be harmful to our pets.

Veterinarian Craig Smith, of Pet Wellness Center, recommends keeping a close eye on your pet's paws, as some ice melt can irritate their skin and, in some cases, cause chemical burns.

Smith says frequent washing and checking of their paws can prevent a situation from worsening.

Experts also recommend keeping all toxins such as antifreeze or other de-icers out of reach of pets.
