Hundreds without power across Southern Illinois

UPDATE 8:02 a. m.

WSIL -- More than 500 people remain without power Wednesday morning as Ameren crews continue to restore power to hundreds of customers throughout the region.

WSIL -- Hundreds of customers woke up without power after an outage early Wednesday morning.

Ameren Illinois representative Kelly Hendrickson tells News 3 those outages happened around 5 a. m. as a result of equipment malfunction.

According to Ameren Illinois' outage map, the outage affected more than 3,000 residents across the region at its peak, specifically affecting the communities of Johnston City and Benton.

Thompsonville schools superintendent Brock Harris tells News 3 that schools there will be closed on Wednesday.

As of 7 a. m., Ameren restored power to more than 1,500 customers, most of them in the Benton area, but the Johnston City area still has more than 1,500 customers without power.
