Keeping pets warm in the cold weather

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- With the colder temperature readings in our area, experts say your pets should stay inside, if they are not used to the cold weather.

However, if your pets are accustomed to cold weather, they will be warm enough with shelter to keep them dry and out of the wind.

Local veterinarians recommend not using any fabrics for bedding as they retain water, and could make your pets more uncomfortable. Instead, they recommend using straw or hay. In addition, experts say to change the bedding periodically, and maintain a source of water that is not frozen.

Lastly, they recommend owners feed their outdoor pets extra food. They also say food high in fat will help to keep them warm.
