The Women's Center launches donation campaign on Giving Tuesday

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- For the past eight years, The Women's Center has participated in Giving Tuesday, which is an international day focused on charitable donations.

The organization serves around 1,200 domestic abuse victims each year throughout Southern Illinois and has raised funds in previous years, but it's been limited.

"We've tinkered with it a couple of times and raised a a few thousand dollars," says John Pfeifer, Development Specialist.

This year, the center is doing things differently by launching its Capital in a Day campaign with the goal of raising $300,000. "We've sort of put everything into it, and tried to sort of do a whole social media campaign to try and get the word out," Pfeifer explains.

The funds will go toward a number of improvements at the center's building in Carbondale. "We need a new roof and gutters, we need 18 new heating and air conditioning units," Pfeifer says.

Other items include an updated security system, a new van following a recent accident which totaled one of their vehicles, and renovations to turn what is currently a storage area into a living space for male domestic abuse survivors.

"Right now, we serve male clients but it's really located in close proximity to the female survivors," Pfeifer explains. "We want to separate them so that everyone is more comfortable."

Pfeifer says although raising $300,000 in just a day might be a stretch, some things are priceless. "Truth be told, I really don't expect to raise $300,000 today. But if we can build awareness in all eight southern Illinois counties through what we're starting today, it will be well worth the effort."

All he wants is clients to be safe and comfortable, and for workers to focus on rebuilding their lives.

Donations can be made on The Women's Center's Facebook page and on its website. The campaign to reach $300,000 will continue until they reach their goal.
