MT. VERNON, Ill. -- A group of Jefferson County charities hand out hot cocoa to people for Giving Tuesday.

Eight groups participated in the event at the Mt. Vernon Kroger: United Way of South Central Illinois, CASA, Spero Family Services, Cedarhurst Center for the Arts, Lifeboat Alliance homeless shelter, the YMCA, One Hope United and Jefferson County Toys For Kids.

Representatives from each group explained what they do and how to donate.

"On Giving Tuesday, it's a chance to draw awareness, mainly, for people to give back to such agencies and causes within our area," Jen McArthy, director of Lifeboat Alliance, said. "And what's great with all of this, all of the money raised today will stay in Mt. Vernon."

The charities also gave away goodie bags, including gift cards.
