Preparing for the Lights Fantastic Parade

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Crews are working on the final preparations for the 28th Annual Lights Fantastic Parade in Carbondale.

For 23 years, Donald Snider, the Traffic Supervisor for the City of Carbondale, has helped prepare for thousands to flock to the strip, and he says this year's show is already expected to bring out a big crowd.

"It looks like we are going to have a large parade this year. I think we are looking at 50 to 60 units and a lot of bands, which always makes the parade good," said Snider.

Employees from the Public Works department will be out all week long making sure the parade route is clean and festive. And to spread more Christmas cheer, the city is asking for people to submit photos of their home light displays on Facebook for the first ever "Let it Glow" contest.

"We will have a team of employees who will actually cast their vote and decide which one is the best holiday display," said Amy Fox, Carbondale Public Relations Officer.

That contest will run through December 17th and the Lights Fantastic Parade is set to begin at 6 p.m. on December 1st.

A free shuttle service will be taking people to the parade from the Murdale Shopping Center and the University Mall.
