Woman accused in murder-for-hire plot says she's ready for trial

MURPHYSBORO, Ill. -- A woman accused of hiring a man to strangle and kill her husband will go on trial in March.

Carmen Stonemark faces charges in the death of Frank Stonemark, who died in October of last year.

Stonemark's attorney, Nick Brown, said he expects to have all the evidence they plan to use during the trial sometime next week.

The case took several months to develop after Frank Stonemark's death more than a year ago. First, prosecutors charged James Michael Deese in May for the murder itself.

He pleaded guilty in July and days later, prosecutors charged Carmen Stonemark in what they believe to be a murder-for-hire plot.

Court documents say Carmen Stonemark was concerned Frank Stonemark was going to divorce her and cut her out of the will.

Prosecutors believe Stonemark hired Deese, a man she was sleeping with, to kill Frank.

Deese is scheduled to be sentenced in January.

A judge scheduled Stonemark's jury trial to begin March 18, with a few hearings to be held before then.
