Motorcyclist killed in Franklin County crash

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ill. -- The Franklin County coroner confirms a Makanda man died in a motorcycle crash Wednesday night.

The crash happened around 8 p.m. Wednesday night on Route 37 south of West Frankfort, between County Line Road and Southpoint Lane. 

Witnesses told authorities that two motorcycles collided. Authorities say the front motorcycle was trying to turn when the second motorcycle struck the front motorcycle from behind, causing both to be ejected from their motorcycles. 

Neither cyclist was wearing a helmet.

One man died at the scene. Coroner Marty Leffler identified that man as 47 year old Jason Andrew Call of Makanda, IL. Leffler says Call sustained head trauma from the accident.

The other cyclist, who was on the front motorcycle, needed to be airlifted to an Evansville, Indiana Hospital. As of Friday afternoon, authorities did not know his condition.

The Franklin County Sheriff Department is handling the investigation. Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the accident.
