DU QUOIN, Ill. -- A local superintendent has been named the 2019 Illinois Superintendent of the year.
Dr. Gary Kelly is the superintendent of Du Quoin Community Unit School District #300.
His nomination was judged and decided upon by the Illinois Association of School Administrators.
Nominees are judged on leadership, communication, professionalism and community involvement.
Kelly has been an educator for 33 years and has spent 22 of those years as superintendent of Du Quoin.
He also served as a teacher, coach, principal and assistant superintendent.
"It is about having great students in our school district," Kelly said in a press release. "Our Board of Education, community and parents have supported the vision and mission of our school district to provide the best education possible for our students. We have a 'school-community' that supports a culture for students to be successful."
Kelly credits the great students in Du Quoin and his family for the success he's had in the district.
Du Quoin CUSD #300 has a student population of 1,500 students.
