McCann: Tamms prison needs to reopen

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDER CO., Ill. -- Over the weekend, Conservative Party Candidate For Governor Sam McCann joined the list of people calling for the state to reopen the Tamms Correctional Center.

The supermax prison has been closed since January 2013 and was built just 20 years ago.

McCann says the closure of Tamms puts correctional officers and inmates in danger.

He says there's high-risk prisoners within the Illinois Department of Corrections that should be separated from other inmates...

"So I'm here today to say we have not forgotten the people of southern Illinois. We have not forgotten our correctional officers. We have not forgotten what it means to run a safe and productive department of corrections," McCann said.

Tamms was closed under Pat Quinn's tenure as Governor.

The facility held prisoners in solitary confinement for a majority of the day.

Critics say the prison was only operating at 50 percent capacity and the size of the building was too costly to maintain.
