CARTERVILLE, Ill. -- Groups in the medical field meet to raise awareness about autism.

The Autism Society of Southern Illinois hosted a conference today at John A. Logan College.

Teachers, parents and others participated in breakout sessions where they heard tips from experts and stories from people dealing with autism, including keynote speaker Kerry Magro.

"I know so many families with younger children on the spectrum who are struggling today and one of the things I want to leave every family with that I meet is that they know that they're not alone in this community," Magro said. "That I'll be there to support them and that we have others in the community who are there for them as well."

Doctors diagnosed Magro with a form of autism when he was four. Now he runs an organization that hosts inclusion events and gives out scholarships.
