Fire chief's family loses everything in house fire

Posted: Updated:

ORAVILLE, Ill --  A firefighter and his family are without a home after a massive fire destroyed their house in Oraville.

That fire broke out earlier this month at the home of Vergennes Fire Chief Chad Sherman. Fire officials confirm his house is a total loss.

Trish Sherman works at the Vergennes Fire Department and is the wife of the fire chief.  Despite her years of experience she says this incident was a scary situation for her and the family.

"We went to run into the house so my husband said no you run and get a fire truck and call 911," said Sherman.

Multiple fire agencies came to aid Sherman's family.

No one was injured in the Oraville fire. Investigators say it was started in the kitchen by an electrical problem.

Residents in the area were shocked after hearing about the incident.

The Shermans say they are thankful for the surrounding community and hope to provide help for people who had similar incidents like the one they faced.

"I've had a lot of support from my neighbors, from my community, and my friends." said Sherman.

GoFundMe account has also been set up to assist the family.
