Electoral Board: Democratic candidate can't be on the ballot

Posted: Updated:

SALINE CO., Ill. -- The Electoral Board of Saline County says Democratic Treasurer Candidate Danny Gibbs shouldn't appear on the November ballot.

State law bars candidates from voting in one party's primary and then running for office for another party in the general election.

Saline County Clerk Kim Buchanan initially placed Gibbs on the ballot without convening the electoral board.

Buchanan voted "present" during Wednesday's board meeting. According to official paperwork, "Buchanan refuses to join electoral board members Clark and Nyberg in this decision because she disagrees with the law and refuses to apply it to the facts presented."

Gibbs now has the opportunity to appeal.
