CARBONDALE, Ill. -- SIU Carbondale Chancellor Carlo Montemagno has died. SIU Interim President Kevin Dorsey announced the news Thursday on Facebook.

Motemagno had been battling cancer. He came to the SIU campus in August 2017.

Dorsey's statement:

To the SIU Carbondale community:

I am deeply sorry to inform you of the passing of SIU Carbondale Chancellor Carlo Montemagno earlier this morning.

Dr. Montemagno was a visionary who worked tirelessly to advance SIU Carbondale since he joined the campus as chancellor in August 2017. He created a roadmap to secure the university’s future; earned the respect and commitment of faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members; and was an unwavering proponent of the university’s mission. He was a distinguished, international expert in nanotechnology and bioengineering.

His loss will be deeply felt at SIU, in Southern Illinois and in the scientific and academic communities. Please join me in sharing our thoughts and prayers with his wife Pam, family and many friends.

We will share information about honoring Dr. Montemagno in consultation with his family.

Meanwhile, I have asked the Board of Trustees to convene a special meeting as soon as possible to appoint an interim chancellor. Until then, I will work directly with SIU Carbondale’s leadership team to ensure that the university continues to move forward. SIU Carbondale has a strong future ahead of it, and together, we will ensure that it fulfills its promise.

Kevin Dorsey
Interim President

Reaction from State Senator Paul Schimpf:

“I was surprised and deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Carlo Montemagno's passing this morning. During his short tenure as Chancellor of SIUC, Dr. Montemagno demonstrated visionary leadership and dedication to the well-being of all of Southern Illinois. Carlo will be missed terribly, but we will honor him by continuing his work to revitalize the university we love.”

Reaction from Carbodnale Chamber of Commerce:

The Carbondale Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is saddened to learn of the passing of Southern Illinois University Chancellor Carlo Montemagno. Chancellor Montemagno served as a member of our Board since August 2017, representing Southern Illinois University.

“My heart breaks for SIU today. During the time the Chancellor served our Board, we were granted a unique ‘peek behind the curtain’, which enabled us to better understand the proposed changes on campus.” said President and CEO, Jennifer Olson.

The Chamber worked closely with Chancellor Montemagno to bridge gaps between the business community and the university, increase Saluki spirit and serve as ambassadors for prospective students, faculty and other visitors to the University. He fought to improve SIUC and the Carbondale community throughout his tenure as Chancellor despite the challenges placed before him. Dr. Montemagno’s work in our community is deeply appreciated and will always be remembered.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Montemagno family, friends, the Carbondale community and SIU campus during this difficult time.

A vigil honoring Chancellor Montemagno will be held 5 p.m. Friday, October 12 at the SIU Student Services Building Pavilion.
