Lawyers working on plea deal for man accused of shooting cop

MURPHYSBORO, Ill. -- A man accused of shooting a police officer could be close to a plea deal.

Alex Karcher appeared in Jackson County court Wednesday.

He faces charges in the shooting of Carbondale police officer Trey Harris in July 2016.

Karcher's lawyer, Sal Intagliata, and Jackson County State's Attorney Mike Carr told a judge they're close to an agreement to resolve the case, but they need more time to negotiate.

They also discussed possible trial dates in January or February if negotiations fall through.

"Whether or not we have to cross that bridge, it may not be necessary," Intagliata said.

Prosecutors believe Karcher was involved in a drug ring, moving several dozen pounds of marijuana.

They also say Karcher was part of a group that went to Carbondale to attack people who owed them money for marijuana.

Officers heard gunshots and chased after the men.

Karcher is accused of shooting at them multiple times, including a shot that hit Harris in the eye.

He's due back in court Nov. 13.
