Rural King break-ins

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- Thieves made off with guns after targeting two Rural King stores in our area.

Early Saturday morning, two individuals entered the West City Rural King and left with two stolen weapons. The store's security cameras captured those suspects stealing two black rifles. West City Police Chief, Scott Choisser, says those pictures are not being released at this time because his department is following leads.

About 26 hours earlier, on Friday morning, someone broke in to the Rural King in Carbondale. Carbondale Police wouldn't say if the two are connected or how many suspects they're looking for. Police say the would-be thieves did not make off with anything, but there was significant property damage inside.

In both cases, a security alarm went off and police arrived within minutes. Sergeant David Kemp with Carbondale says alarms are a great deterrent.

"Some stores have an audible alarm that the suspects can hear, which may motivate them to leave because they know the inevitable-- that the police are on their way," said Sgt. Kemp.

Kemp adds some stores also have silent alarms. It just depends on what kind store you have, as to which alarm would be best. Security cameras, lights and even a guard dog can help protect your firearms in your own home. But most importantly, lock them up.

Chief Choisser with West City Police asks that anyone in the public who knows someone who obtained weapons suspiciously, to please contact the police department.
