Southern Illinois Plane Pull raises more than $10,000 for Special Olympics

MURPHYSBORO -- Hundreds of competitors tested their strength Saturday, pulling a 30-ton plane to raise money for the Special Olympics.

Seventeen teams took part in the ultimate tug of war competition Saturday, pulling the full-size 737.

"Events like this help athletes like myself just to keep going and do what we like to do and helps us out for all of our sporting events," said Marisa Prendergast, who competes in nearly a dozen events at the Special Olympics every year.

She was among several Special Olympics athletes to compete in the plane pull, and says the support from the community is incredible.

Matt Lees participated in the event as part of a team from the HUB and called the competition fun for all the right reasons.

"I did it for camaraderie with the guys around the gym, but really an opportunity to show these athletes, these Special Olympics athletes that we support them," he said.

And while there were awards and prizes handed out, it didn't really matter, because when raising more than $10,000 for a good cause, everyone involved goes home a winner.
