Jackson County board, employees reach tentative contract deal

Posted: Updated:

MURPHYSBORO, Ill. -- Both sides in a contract dispute involving Jackson County employees have reached a tentative deal to avoid a strike.

Thursday night, county leaders met with AFSCME union representatives to hash out the details with a federal mediator.

The county board voted last month to rule talks were at an impasse, meaning it was imposing its last offer to about 40 employees, mostly in the county clerk's office and the sheriff's maintenance staff.

It overturned that vote earlier this week.

AFSCME spokesman Jeremy Noelle said the proposal is a fair deal.

"With that agreement, both sides feel we can go back to the (union) membership and go back to the county board and get it passed," Noelle said.

Union members have to approve the contract first, something Noelle says should happen next week.

Then it goes to the county board for final approval.
