HUD gives $6 million to demolish housing units in Cairo

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) today awarded $8 million in grant funding to eight public housing authorities across the country to keep residents safe and secure, including more than $6 million to southern Illinois.

The majority of that money-- $6,337,267 -- was awarded to the Alexander County Housing Authority (ACHA) in Cairo, Illinois to demolish 278 units in the Elmwood and McBride buildings due to the unsafe and unsanitary condition of the units.

HUD has classified the demolition as an emergency because of the limited capital funding that is currently available to ACHA, which results in an unpreventable emergency endangering the lives and safety of residents at the site.

News 3 reported earlier this year HUD was aware of problems within the Alexander County housing authority since 2010.

300 families were forced out of their homes due to poor living conditions.
