Superintendent of Catholic Schools for Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese retires

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KSPR) -- The Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese submitted his letter of resignation for retirement Tuesday.

Bishop Edward Rice says Leon Witt's retirement is effective immediately.

The dioceses reports it received two different reports from former students concerning the conduct and comments made by Witt when he was a teacher and principal in Springfield. The events happened 20 and 25 years ago. Consistent with diocesan policy involving minors and vulnerable adults, the diocese referred the complaints to the prosecuting attorney. The prosecutor determined neither complaint represented child abuse, child sexual abuse, or sexual misconduct.

Witt was hired in 1976 as a teacher at St. Mary Catholic School, Joplin. In 1980, he was named Principal of St. Joseph Catholic School, Springfield. Witt was appointed diocesan Superintendent in 2003.

Dr. Gene Aug, currently serving as diocesan director of development and properties since 2008, has taken on additional responsibilities to serve as Interim Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau.
