Carbondale Mayor searches for a new Human Relations Commission Chair

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Carbondale Mayor, Mike Henry, plans to replace the man who currently holds the spot for a new Human Relations Commission Chair.

Jerrold Hennrich has held the Carbondale Human Relations Commission chair for more than 3 years. He says the mayor called to say his term had expired, and asking him not to show up to meetings. But according to Hennrich, the city code states he still holds the position until a replacement is found. He claims the mayor told him to not attend a Thursday roundtable meeting because Southern Illinois University might be insulted. Hennrich has been outspoken about the changes needed at SIU.

"The mayor doesn't want to step on any toes of the administration. The mayor is under the impression that the chancellor's plan is a good plan," said Hennrich.

Mayor Mike Henry issued a statement in response:

The City of Carbondale is always looking for new people with fresh ideas that represent a diverse group of people in the community to serve on all of our boards and commissions. The recent Human Relations Commission community roundtable discussion had no impact on my decision to appoint a new chair to the HRC. For the last four years, Jerrold Hennrich has served as the chair of the HRC and in April, his term expired. Since then, I’ve been looking for someone to replace him.

But according to city code, commissioners can't be terminated easily. Under paragraph B: the board would need the necessary votes to terminate the commissioner and appoint a replacement. Under paragraph C: the board can remove a commissioner because their actions no longer serve in the best interest of the city.

Hennrich said he doesn't want to argue with the mayor, "I'm not trying to pick a fight, I'm just trying to do what's right."
