SEMO vs. SIU: War for the Wheel

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- News 3 This Morning anchors Evie Allen and Kevin Hunsperger seemingly get along. But did you know they went to rival colleges? That rivalry comes to a head this Saturday night (Sept. 15) when the Salukis host the Redhawks in Carbondale.

The teams first played each other in 1909. SEMO sports the better record at 40-37-8. (They haven't played against each other every year). The War for the Wheel came about because the teams would travel across the Mississippi via riverboat. One year the boat sank when the Salukis were traveling to Cape, but the game went on anyway.

Each year, the winner of the game will take home an authentic ship's wheel to its side of the Mississippi River and proudly display it until the next scheduled matchup. The wheel currently resides in Carbondale since SIU won last year's meeting between the teams.

You can catch the action Saturday night at 6 at Saluki Stadium.

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- While snow days might be a nice break for students, they can create challenges for parents of young children, who work during the day. One of those parents is Krista Balsley, a single mother raising her two kids in Carbondale.
