Zeigler to lose its only grocery store

Posted: Updated:

ZEIGLER, Ill. -- Zeigler's only grocery store, which has been in business since 1995 is closing this Friday. The owners, Rodney and Karen Furlow, say it's one of the toughest decisions they had to make, and closing was their last resort

Rodney Furlow says," It gets to be a part of you after a while I mean it's your lifestyle pretty much I mean you own your small business you're committed to it, put in many hours in a week."

The Furlows say they are closing because Rodney's health isn't improving, and the workload is too much for them.

"Rodney's health has declined and last summer he had surgery on his eye and he had surgery again on his eye, so his vision is really going," said Karen.

The Furlows say although the closure will make it difficult for residents, the response has been positive. The store owners hope the community isn't without a store for long.

People in Zeigler will now have to travel to Herrin or West Frankfort for groceries. Zeigler Mayor, Dennis Mitchell thanks the Furlows for their many years of service to the community. The city is working with potential buyers, but as of now there are no deals in place.
